Tellow
Administration tools for freelancers

Tellow makes administration easy for freelancers and small companies. It's an app on Web, IOS and Android

When I started at Tellow, we had quite a challenge

We found out that many users dropped off quickly after initial bootup, in reviews and surveys we read that users didn't like to provide us with much info before getting an understanding of the app's features
. Because of this, we tackled a couple of things across our platform to show the benefits/features of the app in advance and made creating an account with as few forms as necessary.

Below you see some of the fixes across different contact points in the user's journey that made a big impact on user influx and retention

Tellow (web)app

Simplified registration flow, a (re)design

People nowadays are becoming more aware of their data, and are especially sensitive when it comes to bank/money-related information, this is a good thing.
but when we started this redesign project, a user creating their account had to fill in 10+ forms before they could try the app.

When we lowered the threshold of asking for their info, around 70% of the user stream that were dropping out before, now continued to create an account. Numbers aren't usually this high, so it must have been a major obstacle for people.

A simple fix with a big impact.

We also had an issue at first where people would download our app because they thought the app was simply to store photographs of receipts. This caused a lot of confusion amongst these users.

It was because we made a mistake on doing a marketing campaign focussed greatly on quick "app installs". So without the right context, lots of random people downloaded the app and felt scammed that the app costs a monthly fee for what they thought was a 1 feature app. We gave them the wrong impression through the lack of information.

What these people could not see and did not realize was that Tellow is a bookkeeping tool with many time-saving features.

To get expectations right, we used screens showing benefits/features upfront inside also in the AppStore , so users would clearly understand what the app was about before downloading it.

It's not sufficient to simply get some random users in, we need to get expectations right to get the right users. We cannot just assume people understand what an app is about from the outside, just because we know the app inside out

Tellow.nl Frontpage design

Tellow.nl frontpage needed a complete redo
with this in mind:

• Eye catcher image above the fold
• Some screenshots of the app itself
• Clearly list features and benefits of the app
• Appstore ratings
• Multiple call-to-actions
• Does this app work with my bank?
• Trusted by these well-known companies
• Social proof, reviews
• A text balloon with the price
• Frequently asked questions
• A footer with additional links
• leave out team photos as they can get outdated quickly

Apps & games for health,

science and wellness

Gainplay creates software mostly in collaboration with organizations from the health industry, combining proven treatments with engagement from the entertainment industry. Resulting in even better treatment results.

Every project had a very different target group, ranging from young kids to the elderly, every group had very specific accessibility requests to keep in mind.

Mobile Diet app/game

For this project of 12 months, I created the progress architecture & visuals.

This was the project that really got me transitioning from visual designer into UX design. Because I learned that you can only get a good project fit when you truly put the customer central in your design decisions

Game Oven Studios *was a games studio,
with games to overcome the social barrier.

All the games we made at Game Oven studios were aimed at getting people together, friends, but first and for most new people. This approach was very unique and experimental, some of the games I worked on were really successful and played by millions worldwide. We received letters of people thanking us for bringing them together

A small company
of 4 and some freelancers. One of the founders would build a prototype, test it in the wild with groups of people, and if it would work well, I had to create a visual layer on top of the game. But because it was such a small company. I had a lot of influence on the interaction design and user experience, even though I was working as an artist-designer back then.

*The company eventually stopped after the other founder (programmer) had to raise a child and longed for more security.

Multi-touch local multiplayer game

GameOven Studio's needed a UI design and other game visuals to evoke a friendly but competitive duel spirit. Bam Fu is a game you play with 2-4 people on the same screen. To win, one must convert most of the buttons in your own color by pressing them swiftly.

Because the buttons would change color in a clockwise manner when players would press on them, I decided it would be convenient if the button was arrow-shaped. So it would be
pointing to the designated player's corner, making it easier to keep track of the tap order.

Another challenge was to design a button that would feel like a good target, zen-like, not extremely detailed but enough to have some real character

I designed this loose UI style as a real hybrid of user interface and game illustration,
this makes it quite different from regular "slick" app design
